How Planning Will Inform My Construction

Overall i have found the planning of my magazine very useful. I firstly stared off my planning with a mind map which allowed me o see the areas i needed to plan. I split it into 5 main heading , where i then created sub-headins showing my ideas about the specific topic. This made my work efficient and showed me exactly what i needed to do.

I felt a good place to start was the name of the magazine. I came up with a variety of different ideas and concluded with the name. Pipeline. I chose this name as i feel its eye-catching, easy to remember and has a meaning to it. After deciding on the name i looked at different designs i could use to create the name. I came up with a number of different styles, i liked all the styles i came up with as i feel they conveyed the genre of music, where bold, eye-catching and clearly showed it was the brand of the magazine.

Another area i planned was the layouts of the 3 separate pages, the front cover, contents page and double page spread. I felt it was important to design a template of the layout as the layout is important for all three pages. For each one i designed 3 as this would give me a verity of options and i could chose the best one. For the front cover i have decided upon the 1st one because i feel this will be the most clear and will also be eye-catching. For the contents page i have decided on the 1st design as i feel it will be clear to look at as its set into colums. This layout is also the best option as the main image that is featured on the front cover is large and near the centre therefore it will be seen first, making the page appealing. For the double page spread i have chosen the 1st option. This is because i feel that having the main image on one page will make it eyecatching and intresting, it will also appeal to my target audiance as their will be less writing and clearly layed out into 3 equal columns.

I looked at colour schemes for the front cover of my magazine. I looked at 4 different colour schemes, two were a band of colour across the top and the other two were filled with colour. I like all of the colour schemes and will decided upon one once i have decided on whether i use the whole image taken of the male model or just the figure of the male model.

Another area i considered was the fonts i will be using throughout the 3 pages. All of the fonts i looked at were good as they fitted well together and fit with the genre of music, however the ones that i have picked for the general font, the headings and sub-headings, all work well together, are bold, easy and clear to read.

My final area of planning was the images. I took a variety of different images that would allow me to pick out a sleeted few images to edit and improve to make more eye-catching and standout. I looked at images for the front cover, contents page and double page spread. I fell all of the images are good and convey the genre of music promote the artist.

After doing the planning I now feel ready to begin the construction of my music magazine.

Analysis Of Images

As part of my planning i decided it was important to look at the main images i would use for the front cover, contents page and the double page spread. I felt this was an important area to plan as i feel the images will make the magazine eye-catching and standout from other leading brands, therefore it is important to get them correct. When thinking about the images i thought about the person i would use, how they would stand, their clothing, the pose they would do and the background. I chose to use a male model as this was the most popular choice of gender from my second questionnaire. I also chose this male as i feel he conveys the style/ genre of music. I decided to take some images against a plain background and other images against a brick wall to show the gene of music as its quite and edgy look, and will also make the picture eye-catching and standout. I styled him in a basic top and jeans to convey him as a new and upcoming artist, with styled messy hair, to show his edgy look.

I took a Verity of different images as this would allow me to pick out the best ones. For the front cover i made sure that each shot was a mid-shot so that it would show the artists clearly to promote them and to make the front cover eye-catching. I also looked at closer up images for the contents page as it needs to promote the artist for the article. Whereas for the double page spread i took images that were slightly less close up to fully show of the artist and will go best with the page layout.

Once i was happy with all of my images i had taken i uploaded them at looked through and picked out a selected few that were appropriate for the front cover, contents page and double page spread. For the front cover i picked out my favourite one and edited them on photoshop. I changed some into black and white and others i changed the exsposure to create different effects, to make the images eye-catching and standout. I did the same for the contents page, and the double page spread, however with the double page spread i could decide on a specific image so i edited two styles and wll later on decide when i being the construction of the magazine.

For the front page i considered making the background transparent instead of having the bricks as i felt that the front cover may be more eye-catching with a coloured background rather than just a whole image. Therefore i created two drafts of the front cover to see what i preferred.

When looking at both of the images with the different backgrounds, i like both, and have decided that when i begin to construct the from cover of my magazine i will create one with each and see which one looks best with all the other additions for example the name, the cover lines, ect.

Fonts

As you can see i have looked at different styles of fonts for the general font, the headings and sub-headings. I felt this was an important area to plan as text is essential in a magazine therefore it needs to be correct. When looking at my font styles i like all of them as they are all simple, clear and easy to read. My favourite font style for the general font is the 3rd option. This is because i think its simple and easy to read, it also fits with the genre of music and will not standout against the subheadings and the headings, therefore it won't draw away attention from the main focus's. For the sub-headings the best option for me is the first one, this is because the font is unique therefore it fits in with the genre of music my magazine specialises in, its bold, eye-catching and its visually dynamic so it makes the magazine appealing and attractive. Finally for the heading i have chosen the 1st option as i fell this one fits in best with the other two styles, therefore linking in all the text, its also good as its clear and easy to read.

Colour Schemes

Another element i chose to look into for my planning of the magazine was colour schemes. When thinking about the colour for the front cover of the magazine i decided on colours that went with the genre of music my magazine fitted. I firstly looked at just a strip of colour across the top of the page as the rest of the page would be filled with the main image, for this style i looked at a bright red and a navy colour. Both of these colours fit to the genre of music are eye-catching and will standout from other leading magazine. I also looked at two designs that would fill the whole page with colour. for the first colour scene i went with dark blue/grey colour as this fits in with the gene, and for the second colour scheme i went for a graduated colour grey. With this effect i felt it was different and therefore eye-catching.

Overall i haven't yet decided on a colour scheme as i feel i need to plan my main photograph before i chose the colour.

Page layouts

Another area i decided to look at for the planning of my magainze was the layout of all three pages. The front cover, contnets page and the double page spread. I created the pages on the programme Serif which would enable me to see what layout i most prefered for each page. This is because i feel that having the main image on one page will make it eyecatching and intresting, it will also appeal to my target audiance as their will be less writing and clearly layed out into 3 equal colums.

Names for magazine

After creating a mind map to look at the specific areas of the magazine i need to plan i stared of by looking at the design of the name. I had already chosen the name 'Pipeline' from the options from my brainstorm. When creating the design of the name i thought about the style/font, the size and the colour. I also encountered the genre of music to ensure the name conveyed this. I firstly went online and created different ideas. These design were all bold and conveyed the genre of music as being indie rock. However i felt that i should look at different fonts i could use to create a more simple design, so i used the desktop Serif were i created less decretive designs and were in colours rather than just black. overall i designed 19 names and liked them all as i feel they convey the genre of music, are eye catching and would standout on the front cover of the magazine and clearly show that Pipeline is the name of the music magazine.

I haven't yet decided on the design of the name as i am going to wait and carry on with the rest of my planning as i feel my design will be made easier when i have looked at colours schemes and page layouts.
